Kodanikuühendus Eesti Metsa Abiks (EMA) avaldas täna vastuse NEPConi tegevjuhi Peter Feilbergi kommentaarile 313 eestlase biomassiteemalisele kirjale.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 14 SEPTEMBER 2020

Civil association Estonian Forest Aid calls for certification schemes to sever ties with NEPCon over their views on sustainable forestry and biomass

The civil association Estonian Forest Aid calls for all certification schemes to sever ties with NEPCon following a response [1] by its Executive Director, Peter Feilberg, to an Open Letter by 313 Estonians to the Danes [2] which highlighted the Danish part in Estonian forest overuse and called upon the Danes to cancel all incentives that encourage imported biomass use. Feilberg’s response denied there are any serious problems with Estonia’s forest management, failing to address any points raised by the original letter.

Estonian Forest Aid’s response [3] refutes all points made by Feilberg, basing its answers on EU Commission reports, Estonian State Audit Office statements, scientific studies and an expert assessment by the Estonian Fund for Nature, concluding that NEPCon must be biased and therefore unfit to offer sustainability certification services. They call upon all certification providers to sever business ties with them to show they are serious about science and sustainability.

“Certification schemes are necessary, but it has to be made certain that their neutrality is not compromised,” said Martin Luiga, the international cooperation specialist at Estonian Forest Aid. “We have been having difficulties with NEPCon’s local branch as well – they let the state forest manager off the hook far too easily, many important FSC criteria are disregarded without an explanation.”

In Estonia, the public debate over forest use dubbed ‘forest war’ has gone on for four years and the Vice President of the European Parliament has promised [4] to overview the EU’s biomass regulation at the start of the decade. The biomass industry is however doing all in its power to prevent losing their source of revenue.
